Speak Up
Speak Up is a Teaching with Primary Sources professional development program that equips teachers with practical daily teaching strategies that support students in developing the academic language of a specific subject or topic by building on the diverse language strengths that students bring to our classrooms.
We will develop strategies for:
1. using primary sources to support and extend academic vocabulary learning prior to reading,
2. teaching complex sentence structures through conversations that are needed for disciplinary writing, and
3. engaging students in equitable peer discussions as opportunities to express their ideas and further develop their understanding, vocabulary, and skills.
The historical context that we will explore is the Civilization Act (1819) and the schools and teaching of Native Americans. Our professional development enables teachers to both learn the history of education and teaching in the United States while developing essential teaching strategies to ensure all learners are learning every day.
We use teaching with primary sources strategies to achieve these goals of historical knowledge, inclusive pedagogy, and greater understanding of how the past shapes our present and how we might use our teaching to imagine a more equitable future.
Our free modules will be available during the 2023 school year. We look forward to you joining us.
